For the Love of Reading
Page Turners
How do you inspire the love of reading? We believe it starts with cultivating that love at home.
The Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation is founded on the belief of spreading the love of reading throughout every grade level in our public k-12 schools. Following our Bag of Books Program, which is centered on kindergarten and early grade school children, we wanted to create a program that could equally encourage this love of reading in early teens. Thus the Page Turners program was formed and implemented in three targeted schools in the area. In 2024 we were able to give away 500 new books to 250 students in the 7th and 8th grades!!
About Page Turners
GOAL: $5,000.00
$5,000 = 500 books received by students in need
SCV Education Foundation is looking to raise $5,000 to order to provide more junior high students help to start or build their own personal libraries and to cultivate their literacy skills. The foundation will partner with junior high schools whose student population has been identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. This population has been selected because research shows that children from low-socioeconomic families are less likely to have experiences that encourage the development of fundamental skills of reading acquisition and that children’s initial reading competency is correlated with the home literacy environment. Children from low-socioeconomic status families enter high school with average literacy skills five years behind those of high-income students. The foundation is looking to continue the Page Turner program into Title 1 schools where approximately 31% of junior high students are falling behind the targeted reading level. Helping students to start their own library with age-appropriate books encourages a literacy environment at home and motivates them to read and improve their literacy skills.
$10 = a book in 1 student’s personal library
